Easy, Effortless Summer Style

We’ve just returned from a fun and long-overdue vacation…to one of my favorite places…the Big Island of Hawaii. We were celebrating our daughter’s milestone birthday; and there’s nothing better, in my opinion, than summertime, when there’s fun to be had and living is easy.

But not necessarily breezy. More like hot and humid.

So, what’s a stylish woman to do? How can you pull off chic looks when the temperature soars and wearing clothes feels like an effort? Here are some strategies for looking and keeping your cool.

1.     Keep it Natural: Natural fibers are not only more elegant, but they’re also cooler and more comfortable. Luxurious linen, washable silk, and crisp cotton are all great choices on hot days. Yes, natural fibers take a bit more care, but for relaxed settings, you can embrace the natural wrinkles and texture inherent in these fibers as part of their beauty. Another option? Hi-tech temperature regulating fabrics that wick moisture, resist odor and keep you cool are available from brands like Uniqlo, A Day, and Epoque Evolution.

2.     Bare isn’t Better: You may think that a strapless or sleeveless option is the easiest way to stay cool in the heat, but when your skin is bare, the sun can feel extra hot. Instead, a layer of cool, floaty fabric can help protect your skin and keep you cooler.

3.     Keep it Simple: Strappy sandals, delicate jewelry, and meltproof makeup are all chic ways to stay polished in the heat. This is not the season for chunky metal jewelry, heavy makeup, or complicated hairstyles. If your hair is long, find a cute, flattering “updo” style you can do with ease.

And consider a balm or powder that help with chafing, or try a thigh-band.

And now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s talk about three outfit ideas you’ll actually want to wear when it’s hot. These are no-fail ways to look breezy and beautiful no matter what the temperature.

Occasion: Brunch

Outfit: Pretty dress, espadrilles, straw bag

The Breakdown: Choose a breezy dress in linen or cotton. A tiered shape is right on trend and will keep you cool and stylish. Avoid the extra voluminous styles that are unflattering to most, and opt instead for a style that is either sleeveless, or shorter, or with an open neckline to avoid the “drowning in fabric” look. A pair of big, colorful but lightweight earrings can be all the jewelry you need. Classic espadrilles and a straw bag complete the look.

Occasion: Poolside Soiree

Outfit: Sleek maillot, matching coverup, poolside bag

The Breakdown: Ditch the boring basic maillot and go for something sleek and elevated that truly represents your personal style. Look for dressmaker details like shirring, embroidery, insets, and even belts and buttons for a look that is elegant and upscale. Pair it with a matching coverup, preferably a sun-protective dress or caftan, and a poolside bag to finish the look.

Occasion: Evening Cocktails

Outfit: Statement top, white jeans, metallic strappy sandals, clutch

The Breakdown: Elevate your basic summertime white jeans with a statement-making blouse. This season, there’s something for everyone, from a classic silk blouse in a gorgeous color to colorful prints, embroidery, and other embellishments. Take the look from day to night with a strappy metallic heel and an evening-friendly clutch.
